Halton Region Cutting Garbage Bag Limit in Half

Halton region has released a four-year plan to revamp its solid waste management system. Changes include cutting the garbage bag limit in half, from six bags to three bags every other week.

We hope to lower costs of waste disposal and extend the life of our landfill site,” said Regional Councillor Jane Fogal. “We currently have one landfill and it’s very expensive to create another one.”

The plan which aims to increase the region’s waste diversion by 65 per cent and extend the lifespan of its landfill for four more years will see a string of green initiative being implemented.

Among these initiatives, the region will cut the garbage bag limit from six bags to three bags every other week. Halton’s current limit of six bags of garbage every two weeks is the highest in the GTA.

If residents want to place additional garbage bags at the curb, they would have to purchase “bag tags” which cost between $1 and $2 from various municipal facilities.

“We have a very successful green bin and blue bin program but some people aren’t using it to their fullest. People are putting recyclables in the regular garbage pickup,” said Fogal.

Research showed the average garbage bag in the Halton region has contains 13 per cent of blue box recyclable material and 23 per cent of green cart material.

The regions plans also extend beyond 2016 and may include programs such as online waste exchanges, for residents to exchange or donate reusable goods, and “toxic taxis,” which pick up household hazardous waste.
